Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan

26 Nov 2008. On the fatefull night of 26 Nov, several iconic buildings in South Mumbai were attacked by terrorists. One of the buildings where the terrorists held people hostage was the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a NSG commando with the 51 Special Action Group, was directed to lead “Operation Black Tornado” and clear the hotel of terrorists. Major Sandeep along with 10 commandos entered the hotel and reached the sixth floor through the staircase. As the team descended the stairs, they sensed the terrorists on the third floor. Major Sandeep not only waged a valiant battle against the terrorists but also did his best to save his injured colleagues. When one of the NSG commandos was injured in the exchange of fire, he arranged for his evacuation and regardless of personal safety chased the terrorists and continued to engage them. In the encounter that followed, he was seriously injured and succumbed to the injuries. Major Sandeep displayed leadership of the highest order while being deployed for Counter Terrorists operations. For his indomitable courage, conspicuous bravery and exemplary devotion to duty, Major Sandeep was posthumously awarded #AshokaChakra #ThisDayThatYear#BraveSonsOfIndia
